NAN SMITH
Innovative Mold Making

April 7, 8, & 9 , 2006

We explored techniques in life casting with internationally known sculptor, Nan Smith. Over the course of three days, participants created life molds using both plaster and alginate. By the end of the workshop, the participants all left with a casts of faces, hands, feet, ears, mouths, and many other casts that they could begin incorporating into their own work.

Nan enlightened everyone from experienced mold-utilizing sculptors to novices in new techniques for mold making and practical uses in clay sculpture. Her patient manner and wealth of knowledge helped every person in attendence expand their knowledge. Everyone had a lot of fun, and while assisting each other with casts, quite a few new friends were made.

Nan Smith is a professor of ceramics at The University of Florida in Gainesville. She received her BFA from the Tyler School of Art and her MFA from The Ohio State University. She has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts regional award for sculpture sponsored by the Southern Arts Federation, three Florida Individual Artists' Fellowships and residencies at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. JERRY AUSTIN
February 18 , 2006

This was the 1st of St. Pete Clay's sculptural workshops in 2006! Jerry Austin’s subject matter – boats and ships – may be unusual in the world of ceramic art…but it’s right at home for the Tampa Bay Area. This weekend we were lucky to see this great craftsman at work demonstrating his techniques in creating, not just boats, but his covered jars, and boxes as well. At the end of the day, there were nothing but glowing reviews. Thank you, Jerry!

Jerry Austin is the Ceramics Professor and Chair of the Studio Art Division of the University of North Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970 and went on to obtain his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Louisiana State University on 1979. His work has been shown nationally since 1983. For more information on the UNT Ceramics Program, please visit www.art.unt.edu.

ROBERT "BOOMER" MOORE

January 28 & 29, 2006

Ohio University's ceramics program was rated number 5 in the nation by US News & World Report in 2005 . This weekend we found out why this acclaimed program is so special when Brad Schwieger and Robert "Boomer" Moore came together for the first time to demonstrate their unique techniques of working with clay.

There were lots of great stories told (Brad says this is the most he's ever heard Boomer talk), and so many great pots made. PLUS! The gallery looked gorgeous. Thanks guys we loved having you here!
