Artist Statement

My pottery experience began as a child, making mud pies in the red clay soil of rural Oklahoma. Seventeen years later, my pottery career began as I stumbled into a ceramics class at Oklahoma State University in 1972. It was an elective for my education/fine arts degree and I have been hooked on clay ever since. I spent every summer off from teaching and speech therapy careers covered in mud.

During a two-year apprenticeship at Mother Earth Pottery in Las Vegas, Nevada, I became intrigued with texture and handwork on wheel-thrown pieces. Making every single piece unique with carving and sculpture became a passion, and a great source of therapy (a side effect of working the clay).

The impressions on each piece have special meaning and come from the heart. Look closely and you will see: buttons from my grandmother's sewing box; shells from the Gulf of Mexico; driftwood and sea creatures from New Zealand and Australia; lace from antique doll dresses and many other personal treasures embedded in the clay. Hopefully, you will have the" urge to touch" each piece.........as I have had the "urge to create" it.

I have spent to last three decades participating in art shows in California, Nevada and Oklahoma; having a home studio and gallery as well as teaching pottery classes. I currently have a working studio at The St Petersburg Clay Company (SPCC). My work is displayed at SPCC as well as several beach galleries.
