Artist in Residence Program

Call to Clay Artists! The St. Petersburg Clay Company is looking to fill a limited number of slots for its Artist-in-Residence program!

Mission Statement

The Resident Artist Program at SPCC is designed to enhance and further the educational experience of clay artists seeking to be recognized in the professional realm. Its premises are to provide pre-professional, emerging artists time and facilities to develop both their work and acumen in the art world, and provide them with the real-world experience of juggling the demands of running a major clay art facility while supporting themselves and concentrating on their personal artwork. It also supports the educational and community functions of SPCC.

Our Facility

SPCC is dedicated to the appreciation of the ceramic arts. Our new 36,000+ sq. ft. facility is located in the historic Seaboard Coastline Railway Station on 2.1 acres near the downtown Art District of St. Petersburg, Florida. We are equipped with:

• two Minnesota flat-top high-fire gas kilns
• salt kiln
• soda kiln
• wood-train kiln
• pit kiln
• raku kilns
• 21-foot long anagama
• a dozen electric kilns
• a large glaze room stocked with dry materials, colorants, house glazes (cone 6 and 10)

Requirements & Qualifications

• Applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
• Applicant must have completed a Bachelor of Arts education or equivalent experience
• Applicant must demonstrate adequate experience in ceramics and must submit evidence of a body of work to support the application

Length of Residency

Residency terms are 1 year in duration (applications accepted all year long), and may be extended for an additional year.

Terms of Residency

Residents are required to log in a minimum of 12 hours of work per week under the direction of AIR Managers. Duties may include greeting the public and handling sales; kiln loading, firing, and maintenance; building maintenance; glaze room maintenance, wood-splitting, workshop assistance; etc. Each resident is required to have a show of his or her own work in our Tim Salen Gallery before the end of the residency term.

In exchange, all AIRs will be granted 24-hour access to the facilities; discounted firings; display space for finished work; teaching opportunities; free admission to workshops; and studio space. Please bear in mind, this is not an "easy" residency program. This program favors the self-motivated. It can be difficult and strenuous, but ultimately proves to be a highly rewarding year.
